Tokyo Go Go Review

One Saturday, Ojan, Julie, and I headed to Tokyo Go Go ( http://www.tokyogogo.com/ ) for a late dinner. Being a Saturday, even though it was late, it was still packed, and we had to wait until some people vacated the bar.

We ordered a few specials:

  • Seared tuna with jalapeno. Nigiri with a thin cross-section of jalapeno on top. Felt like a one note dish to me though the other two people enjoyed it.
  • Roll of hamachi tempura with avocado. I liked how the richness of the avocado went with the warm crispness of the tempura. My favorite of the evening. But then I tend to like tempura in rolls.
  • Hamachi cheek with dipping sauce. A huge piece of yellowtail. I liked the pieces near the bones the best, as they had the more complex flavor, though others preferred the moistness and rich fatiness (what do you call fish when they're well marbled like steak?) of the center pieces. In any case, I wasn't that excited by it, though again my dining companions were.
  • Kamikaze roll (spicy tuna and asparagus). Good, though the crunch of the asparagus is pretty surprising. Ojan preferred this to the tempura rolls.

Everything else we ordered was fairly standard and reasonable quality: endamame, miso soup, sake (salmon nigir), unagi (eel nigiri), spicy tuna rolls, and tamago (egg nigiri). I hadn't ever ordered tamago before; the sweet egg and rice mixture was better than the typical boring results one gets mixing eggs and rice.

We also, of course, had drinks: Lychee Martini, Sake Colada (sake, rum, and pineapple), and a Peach Blossom (sake, schnapps, and orange juice). All were weak and disappointing. I could barely taste or feel any alcohol in my martini, though the existence of two actually lychees was nice. After those, we shared an Asahi, a Japanese beer that wasn't disagreeable.

Original Announcement

Since this was a destination Ojan and Julie chose that evening, there was no original announcement.
