The Blue Plate Review

 

The Blue Plate served us sophisticated, respectable takes on ordinary American dishes.  The desserts in particular were better than most desserts we get on these outings.  We'd return.

To start, we had:

  • focaccia, flavored with olive oil, salt, and crusty cheese.

 

  • grilled hearts of romaine (two long, large strips).  This came with avocado, cherry tomatoes, and really smokey bacon.  The bacon worked very well with the balsamic vinegar.

 

  • grilled squid.  Served with lemon and pepper, these tender squid were notably fresh.  Pretty good.


For entrees, we tried:

  • two orders of the restaurant's famous mac & cheese: precisely "macaroni and drunken spanish goat cheese."  (Drunken goat cheese is a type of goat cheese.)  Served in a creme brulee dish, it wasn't too goat-y.  I thought this might've been too much food, but it turns out we finished it.  We must've liked it.

 

  • the "blue plate meatloaf" with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. The meatloaf, shaped like a brick (!), was spicy (not a complaint, just an observation) and good.  The mashed potatoes smelled potently of garlic--just one whiff when they put them down was enough to tell.  Indeed, if you poked through them, you'd find whole cloves.

 

  • cilantro-crusted lamb with roasted peppers, accompanied with couscous with cherry tomatoes.  Tender lamb with a spicy kick.

 

  • cavatelli pasta with cheese, asparagus, and mushrooms.  Cavatelli is a type of pasta I hadn't seen before: it's inch-long oval noodles.  The pasta was unexpectedly somewhat dense.  We found the dish bland, deciding it needed salt, and ended up deciding we liked it better with the sauce from the meatloaf or lamb dishes.  Also, we liked the pine nuts.

 

We tried two desserts:

  • Warm chocolate cake with fleur de sel caramel.  (Fleur de sel is a type of sea salt.)  Good, like a large brownie.  Served with chocolate chip ice cream.  Sour after-taste.

 

  • Peach upside-down cake, along with mascarpone and candied apples.  A sweet cake.  Though it had less peach than we expected (probably not even a whole one), we liked it, and Oj in particular would definitely get it again.


We enjoyed the setting.  The restaurant has a funky, quirky charm, as exemplified by the variety of light fixtures, the modern(-ish) art, and even the one bathroom with a picture of a topless woman.  Water was served in a Strauss creamery bottle.  We sat in the back, overlooking a verdant patio through a picture window; there was an open kitchen in the front.  The restaurant felt welcoming, a comfortable place to sit and eat.  (This was in spite of the lack of clear corridors for getting around.)

I was amused that Ow got IDed.

 

The total was $32/person including tax and tip but not including drinks.
