Tabu Review

Tabu served me good and unusual enchiladas. Generally everything else was only decent at best.

The meal started with chips. Because they were hot, I think they were freshly made. Sadly, however, they were too salty to eat. The accompanying salsa was a basic, standard, decent red salsa.

For my entree, I had "pato mole enchiladas: seasoned duck, guajillo mole sauce, Rogue Creamery cheddar, olives, green onions." Served in an oven-heated plate, these two enchiladas were quite appealing: dark and rich in flavor. I like the subtle ways duck is different from chicken; I really think the duck worked better with this mole than chicken would have.

Rice and beans came with the enchiladas. The beans were lively and had retained their texture (i.e., weren't overcooked). The drops of onion and cheeses added something to them as well. I liked them.

The Mexican rice, on the other hand, was bad. It had the wrong texture--like they made it from the wrong type of rice--and had the wrong spicing.

For dessert, I had a Mexican chocolate torte, which the waitress described as "almost like a flour-less chocolate cake." It was a decent, dense, almost fudgy, cake. I didn't bother finishing it.

With dinner, I had a glass of Chilean wine, "Viu Manent, Malbec 'Secreto' 2006," which the menu described as "ripe pear and quince." I thought it was mild, yet bright with acid and structure. While it didn't have the freshness of a newly opened bottle, I wouldn't call it old.

Tabu, which includes both a restaurant and a bar, is located less than a block from the Shakespeare festival theaters.

Indeed, it emptied a bit before 8pm, the start time for the evening's shows. I took this video of the restaurant's slightly funky, south-of-the-border style around that time.

Tabu offers other unusual Mexican-inspired fare such as a Tijuana caesar salad and honey chipotle salmon.

Original Announcement

There was no original announcement. As part of organizing a trip to Oregon's Shakespeare Festival, I did much research via chowhound and other web sites on good restaurants in Ashland.

One interesting-sounding restaurant on the list was Tabu.
