Original Little Star Pizza Review from 2005-07-13

Little Star indeed had very good deep-dish Chicago-style pizza, better than Zachary's. We had the eponymous pizza, a pizza filled with a light mixture of spinach, ricotto, and feta. Definitely less cheese and a less dense filling than Zachary's, a fact we liked. The crunchy crust, giving a nice satisfaction to each bite, was made partially from corn bread. This gave the crust a slightly unusual flavor that took a little time to get used to, but everyone admitted they ended up liking it. But the crunch was definitely the focus of the crust.

We also had a slice of housemade cheesecake which, while good, was scary because of the combination of its size (it was generous) with its richness (it was one of the richest cheesecakes I've tasted in quite a while). We couldn't finish it so we took the remainder to go.

The atmosphere was surprising. I'd expected a whole in the wall pizza joint, but it turned out to be a classy restaurant with dim lights, waiters dressed in black uniforms, and dark wooden tables with candles on them. The clientele was uniform: uniformly well dressed (e.g., advertising or business types) white people. The jukebook, supposedly known for a good selection of songs, turned out to be loud enough to make conversation a little difficult.

Original Announcement

This week on *Wednesday* we'll head toward Little Star Pizza, a hole-in-the-wall hip little Chicago-style pizza joint. A pizza reviewer proclaimed, "this is head and shoulders above Zachary's." It's quite a bit west of the Civic Center, and a bit north of the Haight. (It's apparently in a district some people call the "Western Addition," but I've never heard of it before.)

Little Star Pizza Review from 2009-02-01

On 2009-02-01, Oj, Ju, Jo, and I went to the Mission location of Little Star. It was quite empty when we dined at 5:45pm, probably due to the super bowl happening at the same time. We had:

  • garlic bread (assembly required) - decent.  Hot sliced bread that we had to spread with soft butter and garlic cloves.  The garlic came in a whole roasted bulb with the bottom chopped off, making it easy to pick out the cloves.  I'm not sure why the cloves seemed skinless.
  • salad - decent mixed green salad topped with gorgonzola cheese and chopped walnuts.  I'd call it good if it weren't lacking in dressing.
  • classic pizza (sausage, green bell peppers, and more) - good.  not as hearty as my past visit (over three years ago now) but still tasty.  Good balance of ingredients, crust, and everything.
  • homemade cheesecake - very good.  Light, straight-up cheesecake in a graham cracker crust.  It disappeared quickly.

Little Star Pizza Review from 2010-05-18

On Tuesday, May 18, 2010, I drove my parents up to city to eat at the Little Star location on Divisadero in the Western Addition.  We had a large half little star (spinach, ricotta, feta, with a little mushrooms, onions, and garlic) and half vegetarian.  The little star tastes mostly of spinach and cheese; the feta was a minor note.  In many bites, we didn't taste it; in others, it was more prominent.  My mom preferred the vegetarian because she doesn't like feta.  I don't like feta either, but I thought it was mild/sparse enough that I didn't mind; I'm not sure which I preferred.  Both halfs were very good.  My parents think this may be the best crust they've had on a Chicago-style pizza.  (It's cornbread, so it's not traditional but, regardless, they liked it more.)  They thought the pizza was delicious and my mom decided to have the leftovers the next day because it was so good.  It also got them in the mood to eat more Chicago-style pizza -- we went out for Chicago-style pizza (not as far away as San Francisco) later that week.  By the way, I think we also had the excellent homemade cheesecake.

Little Star Pizza Review from 2011-01-09

On Sunday, January 9, 2011, Oj, Ju, and I went out for Little Star.  We had garlic bread--the same deconstructed version that I don't appreciate as much as ordinary garlic bread.  We also had a classic deep-dish, containing mild sausage, mushrooms, onion, and bell peppers.  Although I didn't think it was as great as usual at first, it grew on me (though I still think it didn't end up being great--even after growing--but only rather good).  We ended the meal with cheesecake, which was excellent as always.  The crust was slightly different than usual, perhaps with some peanut butter flavoring.
