Gerry's Grill Review

We enjoyed our meal of Filipino food at Gerry's Grill in Union City.

http://www.gerrysgrill.com/

We started with the "oriental" salmon sashimi: many chunks of salmon sashimi tossed with a sweet soy sauce, green onions, tomatoes, and green chiles, all served on a bed of cabbage (green and red). This was delicious! A lovely blend of sweet (sauce), salty (sauce), spicy (peppers), and smooth (salmon itself).

We also tried the grilled squid. It was pretty good. They gave us most pieces of the squid: the steak (body), the tentacles, and even the nubs of newly growing tentacles. Served in a similar sauce to the salmon, and accompanied by pickled vegetables (carrots, cabbage, and squash) that, although respectable on their own, didn't go with the squid. The squid become less pleasant as it cooled.

Pancit bohin, one of Philippine's traditional noodle dishes, was our other entree. It consisted of thin noodles tossed with red onions, carrots, chicken, and wonderfully juicy shrimp. The shrimp were great, though were sadly few and far between. The dish as a whole, however, was merely decent: simple and satisfying but a bit boring. We got the impression its mildness was intended as a contrast to the more assertive dishes on the menu.

The decor felt a lot like a Chili's: an open dining room with dark wooden tables and a smattering of televisions. Gerry's Grill also has a semi-open kitchen. (I don't think Chili's has that.)

The total was $20/person including tax and tip. We didn't order any drinks.
